From sketch to CAD: turning a drawing into a file that can be cast
A drawing carries intent, not dimensions. What your sketch settles on its own, the decisions it quietly leaves open, and how to annotate one so the first model comes back right.
You have a drawing. It might be a rendered design on marker paper, a page from a notebook, or something worked out on the back of an order pad while a customer described what they wanted. The question is whether it is enough to commission a model from.
It is. A sketch is the strongest possible starting point for a design, and a weak one for dimensions. Understanding which half of the job it does is what makes the difference between a first model that lands and one that becomes a negotiation.
A sketch is not a photograph, and the difference matters
A photograph shows a real object. The proportions are distorted by the lens, but they are recoverable, because something physical stood in front of the camera at a fixed size.
A drawing shows intent. Nothing in it is measurable. A band drawn three millimetres wide on paper is not a three millimetre band, it is a band drawn at whatever width read well on the page. Scale, thickness and depth are not compressed in a sketch the way they are in a photograph. They were never recorded.
In exchange, a sketch tells us something no photograph can: what you consider the point of the piece. Which line you laboured over, where the emphasis sits, what the design is arguing for. That is genuinely useful, and it is why we would rather have a rough drawing with intent than a sharp photograph of something almost right.
What a drawing settles on its own
- Silhouette and stance. How the piece sits, how tall it stands, whether it reads delicate or substantial.
- Internal proportion. The relationship between head and shank, or between a drop and its bail, even where the absolute sizes are unknown.
- Stone count and arrangement. Where the stones go, in what pattern, and which one is the subject.
- Setting character. Whether stones are held in claws, wrapped, or set flush into a surface.
- The front elevation, which is usually the view a customer has agreed to in their head.
That is a real design, and most of it survives translation intact.
What a drawing leaves open
Four things, and every one of them has to be decided by somebody before metal exists.
- Scale. A sketch has no size unless you write one on it. The same drawing works as a slim stacking band or a statement ring, and the choice is not visible on the page.
- The side and the underside. Most sketches are a single view. A ring is a three-dimensional object, and the profile, the gallery, and the way the shank meets the head are all undrawn. Whoever models the piece decides them, and would rather do that with you than on your behalf.
- Depth and thickness. How high the head stands, how deep the stone sits, how thick the metal is behind what you can see. Line drawings have no thickness at all.
- Whether it can actually be made. A drawing is under no obligation to be manufacturable, and the good ones frequently are not.
The drawing conventions that have to be converted
Design renderings exaggerate, and they do it deliberately, because a technically accurate drawing of a ring reads as a small grey smudge. These are conventions rather than errors, but each one is a decision waiting to be made:
- Centre stones are drawn larger than life, so they carry the composition. Modelled to the customer's actual stone, the piece can look noticeably different from the drawing that sold it.
- Claws are drawn as hairlines. Real prongs need enough metal to survive casting and years of wear, so they will be heavier than the page suggests.
- Pavé is indicated as a row of even circles. Real seats have to be spaced so a setter can raise beads between them without breaking through.
- Elements sometimes float, held up by nothing, because a drawing has no gravity. Something has to connect them.
None of this stops a drawing being modelled. It just means that the closer we can get to your intention on these points before we start, the fewer rounds it takes.
How to annotate a sketch so it survives
Five minutes with a pen on the drawing itself is worth more than a page of description sent separately.
- Write the millimetres directly on the drawing: band width, overall length or drop, and the measured dimensions of every stone, melee included. A nominal carat weight is not a measurement.
- Add a side view, however crude. Two rough views beat one beautiful one, every time.
- Mark what is deliberate. Circle the shoulders and note that the taper is intended, so a wobble in the line does not get faithfully reproduced as a feature.
- Give the finger or wrist size, the metal and the finish, since these set minimum thicknesses and prong strength.
- Say how the piece will be worn. A drawing cannot tell us whether this is an everyday ring or an occasion piece, and that changes what is safe to build.
The question that prevents most disagreements
There are two entirely legitimate briefs that look identical on paper, and they produce different models.
The first is literal: build what I drew, and correct only what will not cast or set. The second is interpretive: this is the direction, make it work as a real piece. Both are fine. The trouble comes when the drawing arrives without saying which, because the modeller has to guess, and roughly half the time they guess the other one.
One sentence settles it. If proportions and the customer's actual stone size conflict, tell us which one wins.
What comes back
A production-ready model in the formats agreed on your quotation, with a render alongside it. The render is where you check the translation: put it next to your drawing at the same angle and see whether the piece you meant survived. That comparison is much easier to have while the design is still a file.
Quotations include revisions, so proportions can be adjusted, a profile reconsidered, or a head lowered while it costs nothing but a day. The same changes after casting cost a casting.
If your drawing is rough
Send it anyway. Napkin standard is genuinely fine, and a quick drawing with the measurements written on it is more useful to us than a polished rendering with none. The character is the part we cannot invent. The numbers we will ask for, and if a sketch is all you have, the first thing we will do is tell you which measurements it is missing.
