No design, just a photo: turning a reference into a production-ready CAD file
You do not need a drawing or a CAD file to commission one. What a photograph can and cannot tell us, and the few measurements that turn a good reconstruction into an accurate one.
A customer holds up their phone with a photograph of a ring they saw. Or a supplier sample arrives that you would like to produce in your own metal, at your own size, with a small change to the shoulders. In both cases you have a reference and no design, and the question is whether that is enough to start.
It is. Almost every brief we receive arrives as references rather than drawings, and producing the design from them is the service. You do not need CAD skills, a sketch, or a technical drawing to commission a model.
What counts as a reference
- A photograph of a physical sample, yours or a customer's.
- A screenshot from a website, a catalogue or social media.
- A hand sketch, however rough. Napkin standard is fine.
- An old or damaged piece you want reproduced or adapted.
- Several images combined, which is the most common brief of all: this setting, that shank, the proportions of the third.
The brief form takes reference files directly alongside the measurements and a free-text description, so everything arrives in one place rather than as a chain of emails.
What a photograph tells us reliably
More than people expect. From good images we can read the silhouette and proportion, the setting type and how the stones are held, the shank profile and how it tapers, surface treatment and finish, the general construction of the gallery and how the piece sits. That is most of the design.
What a photograph cannot tell us
Dimensions. This is the whole of the problem, and it is worth being blunt about it.
- Lens angle and distance distort everything. A ring photographed slightly from above reads shorter than it is, and there is no way to correct for it from the image alone.
- Stone sizes cannot be measured from a photo, and a seat cut to a guess will be loose or will not accept the stone.
- Ring size is invisible. So is wall thickness, which decides whether the piece survives casting.
- The underside is almost never photographed, and the gallery is where much of the construction lives.
- Metal and karat cannot be judged from a screen, and they set minimum thicknesses and prong strength.
So a photograph alone produces a model that looks right and may not fit. A photograph plus a handful of real measurements produces one that is correct. The difference is about five minutes of work at your bench.
The measurements that close the gap
- Ring size as an internal diameter in millimetres, or the size with the sizing system named, since UK, US and European scales do not align.
- Every stone measured in millimetres, including the melee. A nominal carat weight is not a measurement.
- Band width and thickness, and whether the interior is flat or comfort fit.
- Overall length or drop for earrings and pendants.
- Metal, karat and finish.
- What to keep from the reference and what to change, in plain words.
Photographing a sample properly
If you have the physical piece in front of you, ten minutes with a phone makes the difference between an interpretation and a reproduction.
- Shoot straight on, at forty-five degrees, and from the side. Three angles beat one perfect one.
- Photograph the underside and the gallery. This is the most commonly missed and most useful image.
- Put a ruler or a calliper in the frame, in the same plane as the piece, so scale is recoverable.
- Use a plain background and diffuse light. Direct flash blows out exactly the detail we need.
- Photograph any hallmark or engraving separately, close up.
The most useful brief: copy this, but change that
The strongest references come with deltas. Not just an image, but an instruction: this setting, a wider band, bezel instead of claws, sized to 17.2 mm internal diameter, in 18ct yellow rather than white.
That single sentence removes most of the ambiguity from a job, and it is why briefs with clear changes tend to come back right on the first model rather than the third.
A word on copying
Reference and reproduction are not the same thing. Taking a well-known house's signature design and having it modelled line for line is a commercial risk you carry, not one the CAD stage removes. Our terms are explicit that the client is responsible for ensuring the references and instructions provided do not infringe anyone else's rights.
In practice this is rarely a problem, because most briefs are adaptations rather than copies, and the changes a customer asks for are usually what makes the piece theirs. If you are unsure whether a reference is too close to a protected design, say so in the brief and we can suggest where to differentiate it.
What comes back
A production-ready model in the formats agreed on your quotation, typically STL for casting and printing, with STEP where a manufacturer needs to edit the geometry and OBJ for renders. Most categories deliver an initial draft within five to seven days, and quotations include revisions so the piece can be refined while it is still a file rather than metal.
You also get a render worth showing your customer. A photograph on a phone is something they imagined. A render of the actual model is something they can approve, and approval before casting is what stops a bespoke commission going wrong at collection.
If your reference is poor
Send it anyway and say so. A blurry photograph from an odd angle is still a starting point, and it is better to tell us the source is weak than to have us treat it as precise. Where the reference cannot support accuracy, we design to the character of the piece and show you the proportions for approval before going further, rather than quietly guessing.
